Wizard Rock: Awwww, cute! They think it's music!

I can understand Potter-mania to a point. After all, I'm the one who reluctantly admitted back in February that I would probably be up at midnight on the 21st of July to buy the new book. In fact, I can almost understand the costumes and the ridiculous candy, although I am still at a loss as to what kind of kind of person would a) go into public dressed as a wizard-in-training and b) deliberately pay for (not to mention consume) a candy made to taste like grass or vomit. I can even almost understand the hundreds of thousands of bookstores that will throw middle-of-the-night parties for bi-spectacled pre-teens and their parents in a couple of weeks. But this?! This just blows it all out of the water.

Apparently "wizard rock" is a thing. Apparently, people, some of whom are grown adults, as in the case of Harry and the Potters' Paul and Joe deGeorge (20 (!) and 28 (!!) respectively), feel that the world is in need of Harry Potter-themed indie rock. In fact, they even feel that it is their responsibility to announce to the world, through lame drum machines and tacky techno-loops, such bold pronouncements as "Voldemort Can't Stop the Rock" and "Hagrid is Fun to Hug" (both of which are song titles of the aforementioned Harry and the Potters. These guys just must be the biggest geeks ever.) I mean, seriously? SERIOUSLY? These two college and post-college age men seriously want to do this with their lives?! And they're not the only ones, either. Of course, after Harry and the Potters must come Draco and the Malfoys, which also consists of two college age brothers who have decided to devote this part of their lives to the strangest (read: geekiest) of musical projects, and after them you have a slew of wizard rock bands, with names as creative as The Whomping Willows, Ginny and the Heartbreakers, The Parselmouths, Dobby and the House Elves, Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills, Siriusly Black (oh, the wit! hahaha...!), Dumbledork (yes, "dork". now THAT's ironic...) the Hermione Crookshanks Experience, and (this one's the best) Huffle my Puffle. Also, in a classic incident of children mimicking adult behavior (or is it the other way around in this case? I'm not sure), the kids have jumped on board, too. Singer and guitar-player Darius started The Hungarian Horntails when he was just eight years-old, and has quickly risen to fame within the "sub-culture" (bah!) of wizard rock. (His debut album is available for purchase as we speak, entitled, I kid you not, "Burn Voldemort's Butt".) But unfortunately for global normalcy and customary maturity, people like Darius are in the minority among popular wizard rock bands. Most of these bands seem to be comprised of high school and college age Harry Potter fans. In fact, the so called "originator" of wizard rock was Drama, the nineteen-year-old singer of indie pop act Switchblade Kittens (which now popularly goes by the moniker "the Weird Sisters"), who famously wrote the song "Ode to Harry Potter" and posted it on her band's web site during the Christmas season of 2000. The song, which focuses on character Ginny Weasley's crush on Harry Potter (the most eloquent of the lyrics:"I can't help but blush when you're near me/But you just exclude me from your circle of three/I'm right in front of you but you don't see/You treat me like I'm a Colin Creevey." ), began the whole phenomenon of Harry Potter-themed indie rock (dubbed "wizard rock" by the press), which is showing no signs of slowing down.

And now if that wasn't nerd-y enough for you, check out this video of Harry and the Potters preforming "Voldemort Can't Stop the Rock", a danceable anthem in which the brothers implore the audience to "stick it to the man" because "where I come from, the man is the guy that breaks into your house, kills your parents, and leaves a scar on your forehead". And apparently, "Voldemort hates dancing". Who new? (Oh, and if you decide that this just isn't enough for you, you can check out other Harry and the Potters tracks, like "Save Ginny Weasley from Dean Thomas", "The Wrath of Hermione", and "Stick it to Dolores", also available on YouTube.)

For more information concerning the "wizard rock phenomenon", you can visit these links. But be warned, depending on your personality and your threshold for the absurd, you may want to give these a miss. They have been known to make their readers laugh hysterically, scream in terror, or cry themselves to sleep at night. Enjoy!

Oh lighten up, it's all in good fun! The world needs more wizard rockers, I'd say.

No, mio amico, they think it's fame and fortune, not necessarily music. And even if not lasting, at least their fifteen minutes of fame.

Get off your high horse. It's all in good fun.

Oh wow, how cool are you, insulting an eight-year-old? As far as "geeky" and "nerdy" and "dorky" goes, I'm pretty sure we all already knew that. I'm also relatively certain that was half the point.

Everyone has their something, right?

The title of "Hagrid Is Fun to Hug" is actually "Accio Hagrid."

You don't get it at all. Its about something people love. It makes people creative and creates a community for people who don't fit in anywhere else. Besides that, its made a difference in the world. it has saved lives. so shut the fuck up!

Go to Hell. We know we're nerds, and it's something we embrace. It's about promoting literacy, raising awareness for social justice, being creative, and decreasing world suck. Fuck you.

How does it promote literacy? Is it because they can only get gigs for free in library's? That doesn't promote literacy at all, its playing at a library.

How is this about promoting awareness for social justice again? How are you personally going to stop the atocities in Darfur, the wrocker's favorite 'social awareness' cause? Go out and do something in your community, directly help people in need. The HPA is a joke. It makes you feel all happy inside, but what do they really do? I haven't seen any real community work organized by them. They just sound like another small time lobbyist group. You need to help your community before you try and affect anything globally.

The wrockers are all narcissists with no talent in music. Rythmically, they sound like 2nd graders. If you as fans want to make something long lasting that might promote the causes you say it promotes, start using your fan power to promote bands and groups with actual talent, instead of fawning over the ones who look like the actors in the movies.

yeah, i agree with that guy.
i'm all for freedom of expression, i'm all for bands, even if they're not that good. i'm all for t-shirts and myspaces and facebooks i'm all for cat ladies finding other cat ladies....
but saying it promotes literacy? oh COME ON. this is a fan community, not a social movement.
ditch the cheezy lyrics.
ditch the gimmicks.
take some actual voice lessons, put a full band together for god's sakes--half of these guys consist of a drum track and 3 lead guitarists. if you really want to reach people, challenge yourself to play a few open-mic nights at local places, try for a few college gigs.

Wow. Someone needs to fact check. Things that jump out as false: Wizard Rock is not only in America.
Darius of the Horntails started the band at age seven.

Real wizard rock isn't about being the most talented band on the market. It's about supporting fellow artists and having fun. You seem to be under the impression that all wizard rockers take themselves seriously.

I'm sure you're laughing while reading this comment, so I'll stop wasting my time trying to make you understand fun. And you can use your time that you'd clearly rather be using for something else- like finding something to deride.

For the love of God, never write about music ever again. You're the music criticism equivalent of dividing by zero. The world...nay, the very universe itself...is threatened by such an epic concentration of fail.

I can't even begin to address all the false statements in this blog entry and in the comments, but here are a few.

1) Yes, it is a thing. It's a Library-of-Congress recognized thing.

2) It does promote literacy. I’ve met so many people who have read Harry Potter because their friend took them to a wrock show and they, imagine this, HAD FUN. They get kids who otherwise don’t read to open books. Also, many of the libraries the wrockers play in are underpriveleged, and have a hard time bringing in youth. Bringing in 100 kids because there's a wizard band GETS THEM IN A LIBRARY and gets them thinking about the material in books.

3) The HPA is not a joke. They just raised over $110,000 in a short online telethon for Partners In Health and sent 3 cargo planes to Haiti. Maybe you heard about it on CNN. Maybe you saw #hhh make it into the top trending topics on Twitter.

The HPA also organized callers and door-to-door volunteers in Maine to inform people about the recent marriage equality vote.

The HPA ALSO does an annual book drive, and sends thousands of books to children who need them.

4) Wizard Rock is SECONDARY for many of these bands. Many of them exist as musicians in other genres and simply do wizard rock because it's fun. There isn't much money made with it; definitely not enough for you to presume it’s financially motivated.

5) The POINT of wizard rock is not to sell records, get record deals or please the masses. Wizard rock is for us, it is something we enjoy. It’s for fun. A lot of those bands you mentioned have been featured on MTV, have been offered record deals, and they turn them down. It's not ABOUT that. It's not about trying to get 15 minutes of fame or make a quick buck through a gimmick. It's a creative output that we share with our friends.

6) Not everyone in wizard rock is untalented. I'm a musician by trade, can make a living from it, am finishing a masters in music and I've been accepted to a Ph.D. program at an Ivy League university.

7) Who are you to define what music is? "Aww cute, they think it's music?" How dare you presume that you are the end-all-be-all of musical definition. Why is your music any more valid than my music? Because your performance aesthetics are different? Because your musical priorities are different? It's a good thing Debussy and Ravel and Mahler and Ives didn't think like you - it's a good thing Buddy Holly and Elvis and Frank Zappa didn't think like you. But like them, we will continue making our music despite your rude critique.

8) What is wizard rock hurting? It's not attacking you. We're not forcing you to listen. You're a real big shot, aren't you? Picking on a kid? Wow.

So while I'm sure you'll continue hating wizard rock, and you're entitled, I recommend that you start checking your facts a little better before you bash an entire subculture and musical community...which consists of hundreds of thousands of people around the globe. Clearly you don't get the point of a participatory music community, which is really shallow and sad, and I'm a little sorry for you.
