Last Thursday marked the 13th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death, and with it came a slew of blog-posts, vigils (yes seriously), and poorly written articles in oily-paged fan-zines (which, I'm sure, somewhere, are blotted with tears). Think what you want to about Kurt Cobain, say what you need about his heroin habit, his digestibility, his "banal" music, and his tattoos-and-piercings-heartthrob status. But it is undeniable that he took rock music away from the pretentious, misogynistic bands with bad hair, tight pants, and oversize libido (not to mention homo-erotic tendencies: wtf is up with those tight pants??) and brought it back to where rock music should be: in the hands of an entire world of youth who needed some sort of fulfillment, some sort of enlightenment, even if that fulfillment only comes from jumping on the bandwagon of the newest angst-y "culture." Somewhere in Nirvana's jagged power chords melodies and tangled, rumbling rhythm a legion of people found peace. And somewhere (don't ask me where) in Cobain's obtuse, nonsensical lyrics and cat-with-a-hairball vocal style, they found truth. And no one can take that away from them. And no one can take that away from me. And I don't think I need to waste time and computer space explaining how astronomical his influence on popular music has been. (Of course, I probably will (and probably just did)... But I'm sure this guy will end up doing it better. And this guy. And this guy.)Oh, and by the way, he was murdered. (Yes, I'm one of those people. When you're through giggling and rolling your eyes, check out this link.)

I recall the big stink when Nirvana became popular. I couldn't be bothered with them at the time as I was too busy, I suppose, with the music that likely inspired them. It wasn't until only a handful of years ago that I made the effort to go back and listen, and I'm glad I did. Nirvana really was one of the better influential bands and I'm not ashamed to say that.
As for whether he was murdered or committed suicide...neither scenario seems implausible to me. He was a mess, but then, Courtney Love was/is a psycho. Whatchagonnado?
So I'm curious--where do you think Kurt would be in the music scene if he was still alive today?
Where do I think Kurt would be in the music scene today? To be honest, I've thought a lot about that, but I genuinely can't give an answer. Exept, of course, to say that aside from some EXTRAORDINARY circumstances, there probably was no way that he could have continued working on music. He was just so dysfunctional the last years of his (who wouldn't be married to Courtney Love), that he wasn't able to do much at all; he was lethargic, unmotivated, in chronic stomach pain, a freqeuntly relapsing junkie, and, quite frankly, kind of a superior prick that couldn't work with people. Dave Grohl (Nirvana drummer) actually called him a "junkie idiot asshole" and threatened to leave the band, and Kurt famously arrived three and a half DAYS late to Nirvana's last recording session, stayed for forty minutes, yelled and Krist and Dave, and left. It actually kind of surprised me that he lived as long as he did, and was able to produce music as long as he did. (Nirvana's LAST album, In Utero, is their best, by the way.)
Dude! You totally just dissed my childhood with the pretentious, misogynistic bands with bad hair, tight pants, and oversize libido (not to mention homo-erotic tendencies: wtf is up with those tight pants??) comment!
I was never really sure how Nirvana was influential though. I personally think that music today wouldn't be all that much different if they didn't exist.
They were a decent garage band and a shitty mainstream band. When they started in on that wave (after Nevermind), you just knew that this was going to end badly.
PS - the last comment i left sounded really bitchy. wow. sorry about that. it's mostly joking. except the "knew it was going to end badly" thing.
and i agree, i'm surprised he lived as long as he did.
he may have been murdered, but he definitely killed himself.
kurt cobain was unanimous with the wave of individuality he brought to the music industry. he was his own man, he hated categories and mainstream cause lets face it categories killed music
